C is for Catholic

What’s the point of a blog if you’re not going to piss people off once in a while? Yep, I did it, I said the ‘C’ word.  There are two topics bound to get the hackles raised on most anybody - politics and religion.  I have nothing against catholics, christians or God - I have something against organized religion. I was born and raised Catholic.  But the older I get, the more I question the notion of organized religion, particularly Catholicism, because it’s what I grew up with.  After commenting on a blog about this subject, another commenter mistook my comments as something against Jesus and his teachings.  Let me make this very clear - again - I have nothing against God or the teachings of Jesus Christ, I believe in them, I believe they are the foundation for any type of spirituality and in general, just a good way to live your life. Love your God, Love others. Period. It’s religion that gives me heartache...and like I said, I’m focusing on Catholicism because this is how I was raised. Particularly the political atmosphere of our times. Namely the birth control debate. Why they feel this is a paramount issue to focus on is beyond me - the last time I checked it’s not a cornerstone of church teaching - so why the big deal. Nobody is forcing Catholics to use birth control - and most of them do anyway.  So what’s the deal? My other issue is the way women are treated - particularly women in the priesthood...what? women priests? There’s no such thing in Catholicism...

Uh....why is that exactly? Again, I don’t recall this being a fundamental component of the teachings of Jesus.

I know of a couple - long story short - who started their own church...their own Catholic church.  What’s wrong with that?  Nothing in general - but in practice? The wife was the priest.  They were basically shunned and facing excommunication from the church for this move.  Again...why?  This woman, obviously felt so close to her God, that she risked everything to become an ordained minister - to follow an internal calling.  What’s wrong with that? In my own mind, my own free-thinking, and independent mind - I see nothing wrong with this.  Why should an institution, dictate what you think, feel and do, in the name of God - I could go on - and obviously I’m barely scratching the surface, and I’m sure that there are plenty of people out there who can quote scripture and find exactly where this is dictated in the bible - a bible written for and by men.  Just my two cents.
